The course is intended for those who have a basic familiarity and working knowledge of the classical orders but are interested in developing a more advanced and nuanced appreciation for how the orders may be applied to actual design circumstances. Participants will be introduced at a practical level to a variety of ways in which the elements may be adapted, as well as to a more general set of criteria that outlines motivations and reasons for modulating the elements in the first place. A number of precedents that demonstrate interpretation of these principles will be examined in detail. Subsequent to this introduction, participants will have an opportunity to put these principles into practice by engaging in an esquisse for the design of a classical composition for a small structure. A complex brief will be designed to challenge participants handling of the elements.
