The Woodlawn Cemetery, highly landscaped and filled with ornate
statuary, is ideally suited for the integrated study of classical design, field sketching and plein air painting. Five years after its founding, The Woodlawn Cemetery adopted the “Landscape-Lawn Plan” — a new design concept that prohibited fencing, promoted open spaces, and encouraged centerpiece memorials surrounded by matching footstones. Accomplished architects, landscape designers and artists were commissioned to design these grand memorials including McKimMeadWhite, John Russell Pope, CarrèreHastings, and John La Farge. The weekend workshop will include an introductory session on materials and
techniques for field sketching and landscape painting, a guided tour of the grounds and on-site demonstrations and instruction.
* Includes the cost of instruction, entrance fees, and box lunch.

Wethersfield House was the former gentleman’s estate of Chauncey Stillman. It includes a Georgian-style brick residence filled with the owner’s collections of arts and antiques. A conservationist and environmentalist, Mr. Stillman took an active interest in land management and gardens. A 10-acre formal garden he created around his home still exists. A one-room extension to the entrance façade contains an architectonic mural design by the Italian classicist Pietro Annigoni. The workshop will begin with a lecture on the history and design of the house (including its extant frescoes) and garden. A tour of the house and grounds and time for independent research will be viewed as an opportunity for artists and designers to compile observational drawings, idea sketches and bozzetti for subsequent studio reference.
* Includes the cost of instruction, entrance fees and roundtrip transport to Wethersfield.
