2012 Rieger Graham Prize Winner

DANIEL HEATH

The Institute’s 2012 Rieger Graham Prize for a three-month fellowship at the American Academy in Rome has been awarded to Daniel Heath.

Daniel completed his Bachelor of Architecture at Auburn University in 2008 and currently resides in Dallas, Texas.  His winning proposal focuses on architecture and urban planning during the papacy of Alexander VII, who, in his brief twelve years as pontiff, managed to have an enormous impact on the face of Rome that remains even today. One of the studies he plans to explore is the notion that the papacy utilized design to create a staged effect, aimed at dictating one’s path and perceptions. Daniel’s interest lies in the time period’s unmatched integration of multiple disciplines of urban planning, architecture, painting and sculpture as evidenced in the work of Bernini.

The jury is overjoyed to be able to award such a life-changing prize to a gifted young architect at the start of his career.
