Honors for Charleston

Two other groups in Charleston had plenty to celebrate when the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America gave out the 2008 Arthur Ross Awards for Excellence in the Classical Tradition on May 5 in Manhattan. Charleston has the distinct honor of being home to two of the six winners; the first winner was for the category of education and the honor went to our American College of the Building Arts. The ACBA is dedicated to educating the next generation of building artisans, preserving the building arts and building quality new structures. For the category of stewardship, the Committee to Save the City took the prize. Started in 1996, this civic group began as an advocacy organization led by Jack W. Simmons, Peg Moore and Truman Moore. Their mission has been to sustain and restore the peaceful ambience of Charleston’s neighborhoods and protect its fragile historic districts, thereby enhancing the quality of resident life and visitor experience. Since its start, the committee has grown from a membership of four to more than 400.
