Temple of Apollo: Statue of Apollo Citherodos

Description:

This cast is probably based on a copy of the statue by Skopas, which was placed in the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine by Augustus. The Temple of Apollo was built in 28 BC in dedication to Apollo and in commemoration of Augustus’ victory at Actium. The Temple was built where lighting had struck, and resided alongside Augustus’ home. Not much is known about the original state of the Temple, although scholarship has been done to rediscover its design. It was Augustus’ first temple construction during his reign. The original statue was found near Tivoli, but now is housed in the Vatican.

Restorations: The end of the nose, the chin, the lips, the right hand and arm from above the elbow, the left hand and part of the arm, parts of both feet, pieces in the drapery and wreath, and part of the lyre.
