Parthenon: Kephalos, West Pediment

Description:

WEST PEDIMENT: The subject of the west pediment is of the competition between Athena and Poseidon for the land of Attica, whose statues are in the center of the pediment. The composition has both drama and symmetry as Athena and Poseidon are sculpted in a diagonal position away from each other, and both flanked by horses on hind legs. Many reconstructions of the pediment show an olive tree between the two main figures – foretelling Athena’s victory over Poseidon.

The cast is of Kephalos’ torso from the west pediment.
