Parthenon Frieze: Procession of Women

Description:

The EAST FRIEZE is placed over the porch columns of the Parthenon. It is the zenith of the Athenian ceremony. This frieze shows the carrying of the peplos (garment) that will be dedicated to Athena. The central scene describes the chief priestess, with two attendants, unfolding the peplos that will be placed on the cult statue of Athena. The east frieze is the only part to illustrate women, both goddesses and maidens.

This cast is from a portion of the East frieze with women walking in procession. The portraits of the women are not visible. Yet, the heavy drapery and each figure’s stance are descriptive features. The figure in the rear seems to hold a particular jug.

Period of Original: Greek

Origin of Original: Greece, Athens

Location of the Cast: 20 W. 44 St. New York, NY USA

Provenance: Metropolitan Museum of Art

Condition: Once again the cast mimics damage to the original frieze, however, there is a large crack in the piece.
