Ara Pacis Augustae

Description:

A miniature cast of the Ara Pacis Augustae, or the Altar of Peace. The original Altar was decreed by the Senate in 13 BC and consecrated four years later. It was positioned to the west of the Via Flaminia – the path Augustus traveled on his return to Rome. The Altar commemorated the peace and prosperity established in Rome under the reign of the Emperor Augustus that followed his victories in Gaul and Spain. The altar not only represents the Pax Romana (Roman Peace), but also signifies Rome’s transition from a republic to an empire.
