The du Ponts: Houses and Gardens in Brandywine, 1900 – 1951
Wednesday, January 27; Reception and book signing at 6:30 pm; Lecture at 7:00 pm
Sponsored by R.D. Rice Construction, Inc.
No American family has dominated the industrial and residential architecture of a state longer than the du Ponts of Delaware. The fortunes amassed from the DuPont Company allowed the family to pursue many passions, resulting in the exquisite art collections, botanical gardens, and libraries now enjoyed by the American public. Winterthur Estate historian, Maggie Lidz, will give a virtual tour of the du Pont family houses and farms, including the celebrated Winterthur, Longwood, and Nemours estates. Also highlighted will be Bellevue, a replica of James Madison’s Montpelier; Eleutherian Mills, the 19th-century “partnership” house overlooking the Brandywine Creek; and Hod House, the “Hodgson” system prefabricated residence built as a summer retreat on 550 acres.
