Publications

Publications play a large role in the mission of the ICA&CA and are overseen by the Publications Committee, an active volunteer group made up of ICA&CA board members, staff, Fellows, and members of the Council of Advisors. The committee, currently chaired by architect and avid reader, Brian Connolly, regularly reviews re-printing possibilities for texts that are no longer available, as well as proposals for new books to be included in the “Classical America Series in Art and Architecture”. This important series is a legacy from Classical America which the ICA&CA now vigorously maintains today. The budget each year includes grant subsidies for either authors or publishers selected to be part of the series.

To support the series, the Classicist Bookshop allows readers to review new releases, the full roster of titles in the series, and a recommended reading list. To facilitate awareness and ordering these indispensable titles, the ICA&CA partners with Amazon.com. The Amazon.com link from the Classicist Bookshop allows for a portion of proceeds from all sales made on-line to benefit the Institute.

Previous publications supported by the ICA&CA include the Institute’s Series of Architectural Books published in association with Acanthus Press; A Decade of Art & Architecture 1992-2002 and the soon-to-be-published Handbook of the Classical Tradition (parts of which are available on-line here).

In 2007, the ICA&CA and Habitat for Humanity embarked upon a national collaboration, with architects selected jointly by the Institute and Habitat, to design Habitat homes that fit within the context of both local communities and regional architectural traditions. The Habitat Pattern Book is a culmination of that collaboration. The Pattern Book is available for purchase by phone order. Call the Institute at 212.730.9646 Ext. 110 for more information.

The ICA&CA also publishes annually, an award-winning scholarly journal, The Classicist and a newsletter, three times a year for members, called The Forum.
