Seated Ares
|
Catalogue Number: 020.060.010
Description: The Parthenon friezes, originally encircling the entire building, represent the Panathenaic procession, a ritual homage to Athena. Unlike many other temple decorations, the friezes depict mortals and not only gods and goddesses. This shows the god of war, Ares, relaxing in his chair. He is identified by the spear-tip carved next to his feet, the handle of which would have been painted rather than carved. This portion of the frieze comes from the East side.
