Please join us for a lecture illustrating the work of Leila Ross Wilburn, Georgia’s second woman architect. Ms. Wilburn believed that the design and construction of a home should not only be for those who could afford an architect. Her career, which spanned from 1909 until her death in 1967, allowed her to develop a series of architectural plan books that have impacted the style and character of some of Atlanta’s most desirable in-town neighborhoods including: Ansley Park, Inman Park, Druid Hills, Decatur, and Eastlake, to name a few. The lecture will also discuss historical architectural publications, which preceded the plan book phenomenon. Seven of her plan books along with other period specific publications will be on display for review before and after the presentation. After the lecture, stay for a neighborhood and home tour to see examples of her work up close in Decatur’s MAK district.

Join us for an insightful educational evening as we explore what classical architects have in common with the architects of sacred spaces of the past. This presentation will examine Sacred Architecture and its application to modern times. Based on his 35-year immersion in the field of sacred symbolism, Bart Mendel will discuss the notion of sacredness through the lens of eastern and western architectural traditions. The talk will focus on the creation of harmony in design, presented through the ancient oriental tenet of the hierarchy of heaven, earth and man. Through understanding these concepts we create the proper relationship between humans and their environment, bringing together and balancing inspiration and practicality.

Nowadays, when a high profile structure is required, it is unusual that the conceptual design is done by a structural engineer—some sort of designer, who is ignorant of the basic principles of structural behavior, sees to this. Later the structural engineer, acting as a scullion, is wheeled in to pick up the pieces, all the while bleating about the technical challenges that are being overcome.

Join the Southern California Chapter of the ICAA for a course involving a careful examination of linear perspective as a tool for depicting spatial illusionism. Artist/Architect Filippo Brunelleschi, Architect/Writer Leon Battista Alberti, and Artist/Inventor Leonardo da Vinci will be discussed as the 15th century founders of linear perspective. At the end of the day, students will have completed exercises in both one-point and two-point perspective; placing architecture and landscaping in pictorial space. They will have an understanding of the fact that linear perspective is important for all artists, regardless of their medium or subject matter, as the concept has remodeled the way artists comprehend and incorporate spatial depth in their work.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. is unique among the churches in the United States; the architectural design is neither imitative nor duplicate of any other church in the world. Constructed entirely of stone, brick, tile, and mortar, the Shrine is without structural steel beams, framework, or columns. It is a blending of techniques both ancient and new—a mingling of architecture and symbol. The National Shrine is, as architects Maginnis and Walsh of Boston stated, “Distinctively American.” Since 1920, the Shrine has been a work-in-progress. Elevated to the status of minor basilica in 1990 by Blessed Pope John Paul II, the National Shrine welcomes millions of pilgrims a year.
