Peter Pennoyer Architects is a Manhattan-based architecture firm whose defining contours are three-fold: institutional, commercial, and primarily residential. The firm’s work is recognized for combining an inventive spirit with an erudite grasp of architectural history and has been widely published and exhibited. With his partners, Thomas P.R. Nugent and Elizabeth Graziolo, his Director of Design, Gregory Gilmartin, and his twenty-five associates, Pennoyer has designed houses, historic renovations, and institutional projects across America.
The strength of Peter Pennoyer Architects—what might perhaps more accurately be described as the firm’s energy of spirit—has been in the practice of classical design. The firm’s institutional commissions have included the renovation and alteration of the visitors’ center at Van Cortland Manor for the Historic Hudson Valley Association, new interiors for The Paul Nitze Center for International Understanding at The Hotchkiss School, and the restoration of the 1920s neo-Georgian ballroom of the Colony Club.
Pennoyer has designed numerous renovations and additions for townhouses and apartments in New York City. In addition to his projects in New York, his residential commissions include private houses in New Mexico, Maine, Massachusetts, California, Utah, Virginia, and New York. Current residential projects are a new stone classical house in Millbrook, New York, and a new federal style house in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
