Mausoleum at Halikarnassos: Amazonomachy Frieze (Relief Block)
Description:
The Mausoleum at Halikarnassos was built to commemorate a prince of Caria Mausolos, who died in 351 BC, commissioned by his wife, Artemisia. The decorative sculptures have been ascribed to Skopas, Bryaxis, Leochares, and Timotheos. The cast is one of seven panels from a frieze which represented the battles between the Greeks and the Amazons. The Amazons, according to mythology, were a fearsome society of women descending from the god of war, Ares, and living along the Thermodon River. Conflict between the Amazons and the Greeks came to a head around the time of the Trojan war and the majority of the civilization was crushed.
