New Heights, the ICAA's program for middle school students, is now in its seventh year in partnership with Marymount School of New York. In October 2021, sixty-two eighth grade students dedicated a week of their fall semester to an immersive look at the world of classical architectural, city planning, and craftsmanship. Through hands-on activities, group projects, and walking tours, students examined how their home of New York City is a living city, with a rich architectural history that continues to inform the ever-changing urban landscape that surrounds them.
As seen in the video above, walking tours throughout the school's Upper East Side neighborhoods illustrated the in-class learning with real life examples of classical design in practice. The week culminated in group projects, where students got to apply their newfound architecture knowledge to redesign their own school building, and contribute their own creations to the built environment that surrounds them. Hear students' own summaries of the week and reflections on what they've learned.
