The Architecture of Place: In Conversation with Dr. Patricia Canelas

The ICAA, INTBAU, and The King's Foundation are pleased to continue their collaboration with The Architecture of Place: In Conversation with..., a series of interviews featuring three architects and scholars from different backgrounds and points of view: John Smylie, Tiffany Abernathy, and Dr. Patricia Canelas. Over the three-part series, each speaker has the chance to play the role of both interviewer and interviewee. In each installment, one of the three architects interviews another about the influences, experiences, and projects that have led to their design perspective on the architecture of place. At the end of each session, students from partnering university departments pose additional questions to the speakers, followed by an open Q&A with attendees.

In this iteration of the series, Tiffany Abernathy interviews Dr. Patricia Canelas about her scholarship and design perspectives.

Patricia Canelas is Course Director and a Lecturer for the Master's in Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Kellogg College. Previously Patricia has held academic positions at the University College London and University of Reading in the UK, and at Escola Superior de Actividades Imobiliárias and Universidade Católica in Portugal. Prior to her academic roles, Patricia worked as an architect and urban planner and continues to work in policy making and analysis at local and national levels in Portugal and the UK.

Her research and teaching seek to advance knowledge on the dynamic relationship between the public, private and civic sectors involved in the governance of value creation (or destruction) and capture through the built environment. This includes exploring how the different sectors share responsibilities, how and why roles and responsibilities shift, the fundamental values of each sector, their knowledge sources, and the relative power of each side.

Intellectually, Patricia is interested in speaking across the disciplines of urban planning, urban design, and real estate, to discuss the fundamental values of the public, private and civic sectors, and how the different sectors conceptualise and engage with sustainable urban development. She has been involved in international research projects in China, US, Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark, Scotland and England.

She holds a PhD in Planning from the Bartlett, UCL, UK (2017) a Master’s in Architecture from University of California, Berkeley, US (2008), a postgraduate degree in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design from Universidade Católica (2006) and a 5-year degree in Architecture from Universidade Lusíada, Portugal (2001).
