The ICAA Celebrates the Classicist No. 13 at Roper House with Classical American Homes Preservation Trust

    By Richard McGovern

    October 20, 2016

On Tuesday evening, October 18, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) co-hosted a cocktail party with Classical American Homes Preservation Trust (CAHPT) at Roper House in Charleston, SC. The event celebrated the launch of the 13th volume of the Classicist -- the ICAA’s annual academic journal, which was recently featured by Garden & Gun magazine. This year, for the first time ever, the publication focuses on the architecture and design of a specific region: the American South. In honor of the Classicist No. 13, the theme of the party was The Best in Southern Classical Architecture & Design.

Over 120 guests were in attendance at the cocktail event with some of the most renowned architectural and design practitioners and supporters present, including ICAA Board Member Stan Dixon, ICAA Southeast Chapter President Gregory Palmer, Andres Duany, Christian Sottile, Jeffrey Davis, Tammy Connor, and James Carter among others. ICAA President Peter Lyden was also present in addition to ICAA Board Member and Classicist Committee Co-Chair Gary Brewer, as well as CAHPT Co-President Margize Howell. The crowd included many enthusiastic ICAA members from across the South, as well as new supporters of the organization.

Roper House is the historic Charleston home of Richard H. Jenrette and part of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust, which Mr. Jenrette founded in 1993. Built in 1838, Roper House was featured in the latest edition of the Classicist among several other architecturally significant buildings and places in Charleston.

Classicist No. 13 Guest Editor David Gobel Margize Howell -- who along with CAHPT Co-President Peter Kenny authored an essay in the Classicist entitled “Architecture on a North-South Axis" -- said: "Roper House's historical significance and location in Charleston made it the perfect setting to celebrate the Classicist No. 13, an important academic publication to which CAHPT was delighted to contribute."

According to ICAA President, Peter Lyden, “The Classicist launch celebration was a wonderful opportunity for the ICAA and CAHPT -- two organizations that share many common goals -- to collaborate. It was also the perfect occasion to recognize practitioners and supporters of southern classical architecture and design in a city that is extraordinarily important to our mission.”
