Hosted by the ICAA Washington Mid-Atlantic Chapter | 7 Credits Toward the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Measured & Analytical Drawing)
This course is organized and supported between the ICAA National Office in New York, The ICAA Washington Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and the School of Architecture and Planning, Catholic University of America. The course is part of the on-going series on Analytical and Measured Drawing. The Federal Triangle of Washington D.C. is one of the foremost groupings of classical buildings in the country, designed by early twentieth century preeminent architects including John Russell Pope, Arthur Brown, and Delano & Aldrich. The course will provide an opportunity to carefully study, measure and draw a variety of classical elements and details. The course will also incorporate discussion on sources of precedents and the adaptation of precedents for new design.

Instructors:
STEPHEN CHRISMAN
Stephen is a Partner at Ferguson & Shamamian Architects in New York City. He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame and Bachelor of Architecture from the Oregon School of Design. His courses have included Classical Architectural Design and Composition, The Art of The Measured Sketchbook, How to Study Buildings: An Analysis of Architectural Composition and Precedent. The Art of Field Drawing; Gothic Architectural Details at Princeton University, and forthcoming Drawing the Classical Garden: Field Drawing at Untermyer Gardens. He has developed and led the ICAA Domestic Drawing Tours of Williamsburg, VA, Charleston, Washington DC, Newport RI, and New Orleans. Stephen is a long-standing Fellow of the ICAA and serves on its National Education Committee, and Curriculum Committee.
RODRIGO BOLLAT MONTENEGRO
Rodrigo is the founding principal at RBM Architecture & Design, a firm with work ranging from custom residences in Costa Rica to urban design in Guatemala. He is a Fellow at the ICAA where he serves on various committees, is a recurring instructor, and was the 2022 recipient of the Award for Emerging Excellence in the Classical Tradition. He holds a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame, where he is an affiliated practitioner, and is currently a visiting professor of architecture at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the White House Historical Association, and co-chairs its Next-Gen Leaders program. Rodrigo is a licensed architect in the state of New York and in his native Guatemala.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Learn about the use of measured, analytical and perspective sketchbook drawing as a design tool and resource from the Renaissance to the present day.
2) Learn techniques for architectural measured drawings, accurately drawing them to scale in a sketchbook.
3) Expand architectural design skills through familiarity with architectural precedents that can be inform future architectural design endeavors.
4) Develop a sensibility for size, scale, proportion and composition through measuring and documentation.
5) Inspire a lifelong passion for sketchbook drawing.
