Join the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation for Viollet-le-Duc: Drawing Worlds with Barry Bergdoll and Martin Bressani. During these exhibition tours at the Bard Graduate Center, Barry and Martin will discuss how drawing played a key role in every aspect of Viollet-le-Duc's career and activities, even serving to establish his public reputation through display after he refused to follow the usual career path and enroll as a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He developed not only a distinct style of drawing, but a philosophy of drawing quite distinct from that taught to the academically trained architects, even as he used drawing as a way of exploring the world in its temporal and physical dimensions.
From studies of buildings, classical and medieval, on his Italian travels via the working drawings for a thorough-going restoration of Notre Dame cathedral to his vision of medieval military architecture and even the structure of the Alps, Viollet-le-Duc's drawings are at once a record of his world, and—he hoped—of ours.
This event is part of The Richard H. Jenrette Preservation Series established in partnership with the ICAA and made possible through a grant from the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation.
