SKETCHING BENEDICT SATURDAY: An Exploration of Jacques Benedict’s WorksSUNKEN GARDENS:This week we focus on a beautiful Jacques Benedict structure that was demolished. Completed in 1911, the Sunken Gardens were situated on the west bank of Cherry Creek. Originally designed by George Kessler in 1909, the gardens were both a neighborhood park and an embellishment for Speer Boulevard. The precast stone and stucco building designed by Jacques Benedict was 137 by 25 feet erected on the foundation of a former structure. The architecture is Florentine of the Renaissance style. The graceful arches are patterned after those of the forums of Florence, Pisa, and Verona of the 15th century. Photos Courtesy of DPL Western History Collection.HOW TO PARTICIPATE:1.
