Capturing Essence: Enduring Classical Landscape Lessons in Cleveland

Join the Ohio & Lake Erie Chapter for an evening lecture with Virginia Burt, FASLA, FCSLA, founder of Virginia Burt Designs. Through selected built work, Burt will explore classical principles in a number of Cleveland landscapes that demonstrate humane, enduring gardens that are deeply responsive to place. The presentation will consider projects across private and public healing settings, highlighting design strategies that connect beauty, local history stewardship, and human well-being.

Learning Objectives

• Learn how classical principles can inform landscape architecture from rural sites to urban public settings, including projects that support physical, mental, and social well-being.
• Understand the challenges and opportunities of applying classical landscape traditions to master planning, site design, cultural landscapes, and the adaptive reuse of historic materials.
• Gain insight into design processes that integrate precedent, craft, ecology, and collaboration with artists, contractors, allied professionals, and communities.
• Examine built work to identify transferable strategies for composing landscapes that are durable, meaningful, humane, and rooted in classical design principles.
