Hosted by the Chicago-Midwest Chapter
Wandering the streets of Chicago, guidebook in hand, mainly looking up at familiar forms, is about as close as most people get to see the city’s internationally acclaimed architecture that has been the subject of countless books and articles. Few have focused closely on the classical forms that flourish at times like aliens, among them.
Join Sara Jain Kumar on April 14, at the Newberry Library, in discussion with Rolf Achilles of her book, Classical Influences in Chicago Architecture: A History and Guide.
Ms. Kumar has written eloquently of her many observations of classical influences hiding in plain sight on the bouquet of fearless forms that is Chicago architecture and has compared her findings with original sources in Greece and Italy.
Page after page, the assemblage of old and new, here and there, side-by-side, are revealed by Ms. Kumar’s exquisite pictures. As a guidebook to classical forms in Chicago architecture, it is a coherent rhythm made understandable by the proximity of the color images coupled with fascinating stories, facts, meanings, and importance. This is a practical and enjoyable experience for the reader, page after engaging page.
This event is hosted by an ICAA Chapter. Please check the Chapter website or contact the Chapter directly, for the most up-to-date details including dates, times, and pricing.
