Hosted by the Southeast Chapter
Valley of the TemplesAgrigento, Sicily
Virtual Graphite & Grits continues as we explore previous and future ICAA travel destinations. First up is Agrigento located on the Italian island of Sicily. The city of Agrigento was founded in 581 BC as Akragas by the Greeks, and the name was later changed to Agrigentum by the Romans. The island of Sicily has also been occupied by the Arabs and Normans, thus contributing to its rich diversity of architectural styles and culture.
The subject for this week is the Valley of Temples, where the ruins of the various public and religious buildings of the fortified city of Akragas are preserved. The reference images include the Doric order Temples of Heracles (500 BC), Concordia (430 BC), and Juno (450 BC), ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus (400 BC) that include colossal telamones, male structural figures representing Atlas, the Tomb of Terone (5 BC), and a partial reconstruction of the Temple of Demeter and Persephone. The surrounding landscape includes a mixture of almond, citrus, and ancient Saracen olive trees.
