Hosted by the Northwest Chapter
Please join the ICAA Northwest for a tour and sketching opportunity at the beautiful Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, Oregon. Our visit will begin with a guided walk through the grounds, after which time will be reserved for individual sketching, tutorial sketching advice, and discussion. We’ll conclude our time with an informal (optional) social gathering at the Garden’s Teahouse. Remaining in the garden afterwards is allowed.
A walled oasis that fills a full city block in downtown Portland, the Lan Su Chinese Garden is a unique treasure of the Pacific Northwest. The Garden is a result of collaboration between the cities of Portland and Suzhou, China, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rich collection of Classical Chinese gardens. Built in 2000 with the skill of artisans and designers from Suzhou, Lan Su is one of the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of China and is inspired by two millennia of Chinese art, architecture, and design. A truly inspiring and tranquil environment, the Lan Su gardens are a complex composition of memorable spaces and processions, filled throughout with hundreds of plants native to China and ornamented with a rich collection of architectural detail.
Refreshments will be available for purchase within the Garden during our visit, and afterwards at the Teahouse social. Please note that “stainable” art media (such as ink, watercolor, or oil) are not allowed on the grounds. Small portable stools are allowed while sketching, provided they facilitate adequate space for other visitors.
This tour will be led by Brendan Hart, a practicing architect in Portland, Oregon. He has worked in states across the country and taught at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame. Brendan is a 2016 recipient of the ICAA’s Rieger Graham prize and a current ICAA Northwest Board member.
PLEASE NOTE: admission is $10.95 @ Entry Gate.
REGISTRATION: via Eventbrite is free - does not cover gate admission.
