An Evening Celebrating Thomas Proctor: Classical Houses

For three decades Los Angeles architect Thomas Proctor has created a distinctive body of work in the classical tradition, work notable for its poetry, grace and mastery of detail. To introduce his first book, Thomas Proctor: Classical Houses, recently published by Rizzoli New York, Proctor will speak on classicism and its traditions as a source of inspiration, invention and delight, drawing upon examples and exemplars from the ancient Mediterranean world to such modern masters as Southern California architects Gordon Kaufmann, Paul Williams and Wallace Neff.

From Thomas Proctor: Classical Houses: "A work of art is a gift. One of the great gifts the ancients have given us is the classical vocabulary that derives from their gift to the gods, the temple. Its elemental structure--column, architrave, frieze and cornice--inform the articulation of the classical house. The use of this vocabulary is at once homage, remembrance and inspiration. Its depth is such that it allows a wide variety of invention, expression and scale...and can bring resonance to the humblest of structures."
