Case Studies in New Classical & Traditional Design: Affordable Housing: The Work of the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara: Part 1

The Case Studies in New Classical & Traditional Design series explores the design and execution of new contemporary classical and traditional work from the practitioner’s perspective. Each session offers a deep dive into a unique project or building type to demystify the complexities of how challenging projects successfully come together.

This iteration of the series provides an in-depth examination of three affordable housing projects in the city of Santa Barbara, California. Building affordable housing remains one of the most challenging sectors in architectural design. Dignified housing that is affordable, located in neighborhoods that are walkable, and is of the quality and character of market-rate housing, while also being financially viable to build, is in short supply. However, public agencies, organizations, architects, and planners are making strides in addressing this deficiency. Their work offers hope and inspires solutions. The Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara is one such entity. HACSB is a public agency that has a long track record of providing safe and quality affordable housing and supportive services to eligible persons with limited incomes while also being a catalyst for thoughtful design.

HACSB was the recipient of the 2022 ICAA Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing. The case studies examined in this course include three projects built and operated by the HACSB and designed by the Cearnal Collective. The program begins with a series of presentations on the context both in Santa Barbara and nationally, followed by individual case studies of three affordable housing projects.

Learning Objectives

• Advance professional knowledge regarding creative design solutions and best practices in the field of affordable housing.
• Learn how traditional building types can be deployed in the design of affordable housing that provides for safe and supportive environments while also enhancing regional architectural character.
• Examine planning and design approaches for housing for persons with limited incomes in walkable neighborhoods that are financially viable and maintain urban design excellence.
• Learn about several affordable housing projects in Santa Barbara to better understand how they have been implemented with respect to resident needs and aspirations; sustainable materials; local codes and regulations; and precedents.

Assessment & Credit

Viewers may receive 2.25 AIA CES Learning Units|HSW and 2.25 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Elective) by watching this two-part video course and subsequently scoring at least 70% on a summative assessment that tests your understanding of the material. Please note that, as this is a two-part program, the quiz for this program is at the end of Part II, and the quiz will test material from both video segments.
