The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Southeast Chapter in collaboration with the North Carolina Chapter are pleased to present the 2023 ICAA Southeast Garden Symposium, An Exploration of the Southeastern Landscape: Mountains to Prairies.
A series of lectures and tours in the western North Carolina Mountains that will take the participants on a journey from the mountains to the historic prairies of the southeast region, exploring new developments and research in sustaining and the restoration of these crucial environments.

The ICAA is excited to offer AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and LA CES PDHs|HSW for attendance at the lectures featured in the ICAA Southeast Garden Symposium.
Instructional Delivery Method: Live In-Person Learning Program Program Level: Introductory Prerequisites: None required Learning Objectives:Designing Biodiverse Landscapes:1. Identify design strategies that increase biodiversity in home landscapes.
2. Understand the potential and impact of residential landscapes on ecological health locally and regionally.
3. Learn about the diversity and value of pollinators in home landscapes and how planting design and native plants attract and nurture them.
4. Understand the breadth of design and style options possible when designing for ecological health.
Rethinking Landscape Conservation in Southern Appalachia:
1. Review the scientific and historical evidence supporting Southern Appalachian grasslands and other types of open ecosystems.
2. Receive an overview of the processes and factors important for creating and maintaining Southern Appalachian grasslands and other types of open ecosystems and know which types of landscapes support open ecosystems and which do not.
3. Discuss case studies of successful restoration projects and of people conserving eastern grasslands that are useful in Southern Appalachia.
4. Summarize key practices that landowners, design firms, and conservation practitioners can consider to maintain/restore grasslands and related ecosystems to provide beautiful and biodiverse habitats in Southern Appalachia.
Biodiversity in the Blue Ridge:
1. Learn about the importance of biodiversity in the Blue Ridge Mountains as a model for ecological gardening.
2. Identify design and management strategies that address increasing stormwater events due to climate change.
3. Understand the importance of native plant communities and the role they play in ecological health.
4. Learn about how public-private partnerships are addressing and solving landscape scale conservation problems.
5. Understand the importance of how architecture intersects ecology and how buildings can tell the story of the land through design and material.
6. Explore the efforts of Southern Highlands Reserve, the National Forrest Service, and the Southern Appalachian Spruce Initiative in restoring the high elevation spruce-fir forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

The ICAA National Office does not offer recurring continuing education classes on a regular basis, but aims to offer future sessions of classes whose demand exceeded capacity. Core classes are generally offered annually or semi-annually. The frequency of ICAA Chapter courses varies by region.

Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) in architecture includes topics that relate to the structural integrity and soundness of a building or a building site.
