Three legendary designers and cultural historians gather in Winston-Salem to discuss the heart of the home, the spaces where we eat, drink, and gather to seek comfort and connection. A daylong seminar with noted experts will explore both the history of southern food and current trends in southern design.
Stan Dixon, an architect based out of Atlanta and Owner of D. Stanley Dixon Architect Inc, will explore in depth how to architecturally design spaces for dining and entertaining with a specific emphasis on the Southern dining rooms and kitchens he's worked on. Dr. Jessica B. Harris, James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, will speak to southern culinary history, some of her favorite recipes, and the most memorable southern kitchens and interiors she has visited. Finally, Thomas Jayne, Owner of Jayne Design Studio and winner of the Andrew Martin Interior Design Award, will speak with J. Thomas Savage about how he incorporates traditional and historical design elements into southern dining spaces. The afternoon will end with a final opportunity to mingle with speakers, obtain signed books, and explore the MESDA galleries.

Stan Dixon, AIA, is the president and founder of his Atlanta-based firm, D. Stanley Dixon Architect, Inc. Raised in Sumner County, Tennessee, Stan was inspired from a young age to study architecture. His edited approach to the classical elements of architecture creates an understated aesthetic that is historically based while embracing influences of modern design. In response to his work, Garden & Gun magazine named Stan one of “The New Faces of Southern Style. He is a three-time winner of the “Southeast Architect of the Year” award given by Veranda magazine, and is an eleven-time winner of the Philip Trammell Shutze Award presented by the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.
Educator and culinary historian Jessica Harris is the author of twelve cookbooks documenting the foods and foodways of the African Diaspora. She has been a professor of English in the SEEK Program at Queens College/C.U.N.Y. for almost five decades. She is a regular presenter at the annual Literary Festival in Oxford, England, a contributor to Garden & Gun, has been honored with many awards including a lifetime achievement award from the Southern Foodways Alliance and was inducted into the James Beard Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in the United States. From abroad and at her homes in New York, New Orleans, and Martha’s Vineyard, Dr. Harris works to connect cultures through cuisine.
For the past 30 years, Thomas Jayne, founder and principal of Jayne Design Studio, has designed rooms that reflect a strong connection to history and place. He draws upon their past for inspiration, seeking details that will deepen and enhance their decoration. Whether the site is a SoHo loft in a late-19th-century industrial building, or a historic Federal house built by a New England whaling merchant, the settings become part of the narrative, their history providing the impetus for the design. Jayne’s most recent publication, Classical Principals for Modern Design takes on the redoubtable Edith Wharton and her co-author Ogden Codman, whose 1897 book The Decoration of Houses is acknowledged as the Bible of American interior design. Thomas and husband Richmond Ellis divide their time between their SoHo loft in New York (housing a major collection of American culinary books spanning 200 years) and an 1836 Creole townhouse in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
J. Thomas Savage, Director of Educational Travel and Conferences at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, as the Design Seminar Master of Ceremonies. Tom’s lifelong passion for country estates and extraordinary collections has led him around the world in pursuit of those with refined taste and style. A native of the South, Tom was previously the senior vice president of Sotheby’s Institute of Art and he served as curator and director of museums for the Historic Charleston Foundation.
