The 25th Annual McKim Lecture with William Curtis and Russell Windham

At the 25th Annual McKim Lecture, presented on March 4th, 2026, the ICAA was honored to welcome William Curtis and Russell Windham, Partners at Curtis & Windham Architects, as distinguished speakers.

Shortly after the release of their new book, Building on Tradition, architects William Curtis and Russell Windham reflected on the nature of their decades-long joint practice and their impassioned pursuit of worthwhile architecture.

Houston may seem like an unlikely environment in which to have built this traditional practice, and two Texans may seem equally unlikely candidates to have done so, but Texas’s modern economy was built on the dreams of people who would dig a hole in the ground and hope. That spirit lives on in the welcoming environment of Houston, where big dreams and bigger dreamers with high expectations have led to extraordinary architectural opportunities.

In this lecture, Curtis and Windham discuss their contributions to the streets of Houston, varied locations throughout the great American Landscape, and beyond, delving into the responsibility that current working architects inherit from bygone generations and the many paths that stem from the study of precedent.

William Curtis’s journey into the world of design began early, accompanying his father on building projects to construction sites and architectural studios, where he witnessed the creative process firsthand. His career began in Washington, D.C., where he focused on large-scale institutional projects that demanded thoughtful contextual engagement. This experience shaped his commitment to creating purpose-driven designs that respect and respond to their surroundings.

Drawn back to his native Texas, William partnered with Russell Windham in 1992. Together, they envisioned a practice that would balance timeless architectural principles with a fresh, adaptive approach. Over the past 33 years, William has been a cornerstone of the firm, shaping its creative vision and driving its growth from a small partnership into a thriving and esteemed practice. A passionate architect and leader, he finds joy in mentoring the next generation of architects, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience.

Russell Windham’s passion for architecture is rooted in the Texas landscape of his youth, where the vast plains and simple structures sparked an early fascination with space and form. After honing his skills at a prestigious London firm, steeped in classicism, Russell settled in Houston, eager to bring his own visions to life. In 1992, he joined forces with William Curtis, establishing Curtis & Windham Architects with a shared commitment to blending timeless architectural principles with a thoughtful and responsive approach.

For over three decades, Russell has been instrumental in shaping the firm’s reputation for excellence. His leadership has guided Curtis & Windham from its early days as a small practice to a recognized leader in the field. Russell is deeply invested in fostering talent within the firm, dedicating himself to mentoring emerging architects and ensuring the firm’s legacy of thoughtful, beautifully crafted designs endures.
