with Juan Montoya and Alexa Hampton

    By ICAA

    March 9, 2022

On Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the ICAA welcomed Juan Montoya and Alexa Hampton for The 3rd Annual Mark Hampton Lecture, where they discussed the intersection of modernism and classicism in Juan's celebrated designs.

In this candid conversation between two acclaimed interior designers, now available online in its entirety, Juan shares stunning photographs from some of his projects in New York and opens the curtain to his thought process, and also reflects on what has sustained his passion for design throughout his career.

The Annual Mark Hampton Lecture honors the legacy of renowned designer Mark Hampton and celebrates the highest caliber of interior design in the classical tradition.

Juan Montoya is one of the most acclaimed and prolific interior designers in the world today. His firm specializes in residential and contract interior design, with projects located throughout the United States and Internationally. A truly original thinker, Juan Montoya is not wedded to a particular style or period. The exquisite juxtaposition of textures, colors and volumes, together with thoughtful attention to shadows, scale and spatial quality, result in interiors that exude refinement and elegant simplicity.

Juan is a member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame and a recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. He has received a Doctorate from New York School of Interior Design, the Star of Design Award, and the Legends Award from Pratt Institute. His contributions to the field of interior design are widely recognized. He is also included in AD100 since its inaugural list, AD Collector (France) top 100, AD 30 Deans of Design and a Grand Master on Elle Decor's A-list.

Since Alexa Hampton took the reins of Mark Hampton, her father’s iconic firm, as owner and president in 1998, she has advanced its legacy of elegant, practical, classically based interiors for modern living. Regularly named to Architectural Digest’s AD100 and House Beautiful’s Top Designer list as well as Elle Décor’s A-List, Hampton translates the classical principles of good design and decoration into some of today’s most elegant, enduring, and functional domestic landscapes.

Like her father, Hampton is a highly regarded author with two critically praised books on design to date – The Language of Interior Design and Decorating in Detail. In an ever-expanding portfolio of acclaimed products, Hampton provides smart, stylish, design-rich solutions for every aspect of the home. Hampton sits on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.
