Timeless Surfaces: The Craftsmanship of French Plaster, Past and Present

with Pierre-Antoine Michel and Aude Chomette

    By ICAA

    October 28, 2025

On September 17, 2025, the ICAA was proud to welcome Atelier Louis Del Boca for a presentation on the history and evolution of plaster craftsmanship—from its classical roots in grand historic interiors to its continued relevance in today’s most refined architectural and design projects.

The presentation examines the history of plaster mastery, tracing its development across centuries and its role in shaping architectural language. As a premier French atelier, Del Boca offers an inside look at the traditional techniques and materials that define the craft, with a focus on the handwork and precision behind each surface. Illustrating how this heritage skill continues to elevate both classical and modern spaces, the program looks behind the scenes at a showcase of French projects including celebrated recent restorations at Versailles and the Hôtel de la Marine, as well as new work for LVMH boutiques and the Hôtel George V.

Pierre-Antoine Michel transitioned into the world of the Decorative Arts, after beginning his career in consulting, where he has elevated the reputation and reach of Atelier Louis Del Boca, both in France and abroad.

He now leads a renowned Haute Decoration workshop of 80 professionals—plaster artisans, stucco specialists, decorative painters, and a full design and project management team.

A true orchestrator of this collective expertise, he ensures that each craftsperson is supported and empowered to focus on their métier, while also securing the company’s growth and expanding its international presence, notably through a showroom in New York.

Deeply committed to transmission, he trains apprentices from prestigious schools and plays a key role in preserving rare techniques such as stucco work.

Atelier Louis Del Boca proudly carries the “Living Heritage Company” label, blending historic savoir-faire with a bold vision for the future of decorative arts.

Aude Chomette is an international consultant specializing in developing French heritage companies for global markets.

With an eye for exceptional craftsmanship and excellence, she represents brands, makers, artists and designers who share these same values.

As former studio director to Marc Jacobs and Olympia Le-Tan, Aude brings deep expertise that spans fashion, design and art.

With her passion for craftsmanship and materials, she is a collector of objects of all kinds, cultivating a distinctive aesthetic sensibility.

Born and raised in Paris, France and now based in New York, Aude is uniquely positioned to foster meaningful collaborations and strategic partnerships between France and the United States, bringing two rich cultural landscapes.

This lecture is presented as part of a Salon Series and as part of The Françoise and Andrew Skurman Lecture Series on Classical French Architecture.
